Schools resume for 2025 academic year

Students across the nation return to school today, January 27th, marking the official start of the 2025 academic year.
This includes an estimated 2.3 million students from early childhood education through grade 12. The first day today started slowly, but as the week progresses, schools are expected to pickup.
While many schools began enrolling students a week or two ago, a few more might finalize registrations in the remaining days.
Education Minister Lucas Dekana confirmed that under the government’s enhanced free education policy, all fees ranging from tuition to project and boarding fees will be fully covered by the government.
He said government has allocated K860 million to ensure this initiative is fully implemented.
“This is no longer a subsidy. From now on, we will refer to it as the government’s free education policy. The government will pay 100 percent of all school fees, including project and boarding fees.
“This is a commitment to every child in this country, to make sure no one is excluded due to financial constraints,” Minster Dekena said.
Meanwhile, Education Secretary Dr. Uke Kombra explained that no student should be denied access to education because of outstanding fees.
“The government’s policy on education is clear. No child should be turned away from a classroom,"Dr. Kombra said.
