Police launch probe into early morning gold robbery

A major police investigation is underway following an early morning heist in Port Moresby where 10 armed men ambushed a private security convoy and escaped with gold bullion, cash, and firearms.

Police Commissioner David Manning confirmed that the armed robbery occurred around 4:30am on Wednesday when two private security vehicles carrying the commercial shipment were intercepted by unknown vehicles.

The heavily armed assailants held the private security personnel at gunpoint before seizing the consignment of gold bullion, cash, and firearms.

Deputy Commissioner of Specialist Operations Donald Yamasombi has been appointed to direct the probe. Investigators are currently interviewing eyewitnesses, security crew members, and management from the security firm.

Manning expressed serious concerns regarding the operation of the private security firm, revealing that police were not informed prior to the high-value transport.

“The gold and cash were being carried by a private security firm and police had not been alerted to the movement prior to it taking place,” Manning said.

“Police are not privy to the standard operating procedures of private security businesses that are contracted to carry commercial valuables.

“This is a very serious incident. Early indications are that the movement of these valuables by the security company leave a lot to be desired in terms of how the private operation was conducted.”

Manning said both the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary [RPNGC] and private clients expect the highest level of professional conduct from security management and staff.

He assured that the priority for RPNGC investigators remains the prompt identification of the suspects, the recovery of the stolen property, and a full review of the security firm’s standard procedures.
