PNG Power scrutinised

The persistent power outages throughout the country and the operations of PNG Power Limited were the subject of scrutiny today in Parliament.

Abau MP Sir Puka Temu raised questions about the state entity described and acknowledged by Government as a terminally ill patient.

He queried what its doing to save PNG Power Limited.

Abau MP Sir Puka Temu described the power situation in the country and that of PNG Power as a very sad one.

Minister in charge of PNG Power Richard Maru outlined his plans including a submission to the National Executive Council for the repayment of K100 million of the K200 million owed by Government.

He also proposed the sale of PNG Powers B and C centers or its small non profitable power hubs across the country.

Port Moresby, Ramu and Gazelle power grids are the only profitable grids at present.

Maru acknowledged PNG Powers debts of K1.3 billion, adding its revenue of K86 million per month is sufficient to keep the power company afloat.

Minister Maru is hopeful of getting PNG Power back on its feet before elections in 2027.
