Media urged to be steadfast

Traditional media is undergoing rapid change, but public broadcasters must remain steadfast in delivering credible news, especially during times of conflict, disaster, and uncertainty.

The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union Secretary-General Ahmed Nadeem issued this challenge this morning at the opening of the ABU Global News Forum at the ABC office in Sydney, Australia.

The forum is themed "Resilient Journalism, Safeguarding Truth and Wellbeing".

Media in PNG and the Asia-Pacific region are experiencing varying challenges, including funding, but have been urged to have a duty of care and remain at the forefront of trusted journalism.

"Trust is important, especially during conflicts, disasters and times of uncertainties," Mr. Nadeem said.

He stressed that one of the most critical areas for public broadcasters is regional reporting, by telling local stories in local voices.

"The important area we serve is accurate news. An area difficult to do, but one we cannot afford to get wrong."

Mr. Nadeem says the ABU, which helps its member countries on capacity building, including the National Broadcasting Corporation, says maintaining public trust must remain the top priority.

It’s being attended by CEOs and news leaders from the 280 ABU member countries.
