World TB Day marked in Southern Highlands

The Southern Highlands Provincial Health Authority today observed World Tuberculosis Day in Mendi town.
The event featured activities aimed at raising awareness about tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, aligning with the importance of World TB Day.
Provincial health staff participated in spreading awareness, while local bands performed songs themed around tuberculosis, captivating the audience and making the event engaging.
Health educator Sister Dorothy Hurum delivered a session, highlighting that the Southern Highlands Province ranks sixth in the country for tuberculosis cases.
She described how residents in remote areas such as Wapusali and Bosavi face huge challenges in accessing necessary medical treatments. Sister Hurum urged individuals living near health centers and aid posts to stick to medical instructions and complete their treatment.
She is concerned over the increasing cases of drug-resistant tuberculosis in the province, citing patients' not sticking to their routine medication as a contributing factor.
Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS Coordinator Augustine Brain shared alarming statistics, indicating that Mendi Hospital, Ialibu, and Pimaga Health Center record the highest number of tuberculosis cases. He said the disease is a growing health crisis.
In her remarks to the audience, Sister Margaret Kareap addressed HIV/AIDS, describing it as a manageable condition compared to tuberculosis.
She stressed the importance of following health guidelines to live a peaceful and cautious life.
Sister Kareap reminded attendees that while HIV/AIDS can be managed through proper care, it remains a life-threatening illness with no medical cure.
