As Papua New Guinea celebrates its 49th Independence Anniversary, Central Province Governor Rufina Peter encourages everyone, especially the people of Central Province, to take a moment to reflect on their development journey.

In her Independence message, she emphasizes that September 16 is more than just a date; it symbolizes the path Papua New Guineans have traveled together as a united nation under the colors of red, black, and gold.

Ms Peter reminds people to honor the past 49 years and remember the contributions of those who came before, particularly the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, whose legacy inspires all Papua New Guineans to strive for a better future.

She calls for Central Province to renew its importance in nation-building, noting its significant role throughout the country's history.

Central Province is proud to have given Port Moresby as the nation's capital and has been at the forefront of establishing the nation.

Governor Peter acknowledges the contributions of key figures from the southern region, including Sir John Guise, Sir Maori Kiki, Sir Ebia Olewale, Dr. Ruben Taureka, Gavera Rea, and Dame Josephine Abaijah, who helped shape the early development of Papua New Guinea and strengthen local communities.
