Brugam secondary in remote Maprik graduates 508 students
Brugam Secondary school, a South Sea Evangelical Church (SSEC) institution in the remote Bumbita-Muhian Local Level Government area of Maprik District, has graduated 508 students.
The school held its 21st Grade 10 and 15th Grade 12 graduation on 1st October under the theme “Shine Through Discipline”, with 230 Grade 10 and 278 Grade 12 students graduating.
Located about 30 kilometres west of Maprik town, Brugam Secondary serves students from different districts across East Sepik Province, reflecting the South Sea Evangelical Church's commitment to providing education to communities beyond its immediate location.
Presenting the school's report, Principal Aminson Kundun acknowledged the continued support from the Maprik District Development Authority, Ambunti-Dreikikier District Development Authority and the Office of East Sepik Governor Allan Bird.
Kundun said the support had contributed to the development of the school, which caters for students from across the province and not only Maprik District.
Reflecting on what makes Brugam students unique, Kundun highlighted their determination to pursue their goals despite challenges after completing secondary education.
“Not all students who graduate from Brugam Secondary find spaces in tertiary institutions, but one thing that makes them stand out from the rest is that they don’t give up. They always work hard, find another way around and achieve their dreams,” Kundun said.
East Sepik Governor Allan Bird, who attended the graduation, delivered the keynote address and encouraged the graduates to continue learning.
“I don’t want you to stop learning. I am happy with the words of your principal. Even if you don’t make it, your grades are not good, use every opportunity to learn,” Governor Bird said.
He reminded the graduates that education was important whether they pursued professional careers or returned to their communities to work on their land.
“Whether you want to become a doctor or pilot, or want to go back and look after your land in your community, in both cases you need to be educated,” he said.
Governor Bird also challenged the graduates to look beyond their villages and province, saying education could open opportunities around the world.
“Don’t just aim for the country. Aim for the world. Education gives you the ticket to see the world. Don’t limit yourself to your village, province and country. The world is out there,” he said.
Meanwhile, South Sea Evangelical Church Education Secretary and Brugam Secondary School Board of Governors Chairman Mack Yarbange acknowledged Governor Bird's presence, saying it added value to the graduation and recognition of the students.
