PNG generates K1.8b cocoa revenue

Papua New Guinea generated more than K1.8 billion in cocoa export revenue last year following total production of 61,000 tonnes, Agriculture Minister John Boito says.

Speaking at the recent launch of the 2026–2035 Cocoa Industry Strategic Plan in Port Moresby, Boito said PNG currently supplies two per cent of the global cocoa market, supporting over 200,000 households and roughly three million people nationwide.

"In 2025 alone, our country produced more than 61,000 tonnes, generating more than K1.8 billion in export revenue," Boito said. "We should reach K2 billion."

He said smallholder farmers directly received more than 80 per cent of those export earnings.

"With over 80 per cent going directly into the pockets of our farmers and families, cocoa is a lifeline that pays for school fees, funds healthcare, builds homes, and provides a pathway to live with dignity," Boito said. "That is why the future of cocoa must remain an urgent national priority."

Cocoa Board of PNG chief executive Jesse Anjen said high global prices over the past several years have driven increased demand for industry extension services across the country.

"As you can see, over the last two to three years, a lot of exciting things have been happening," Anjen said. "There is a huge demand for cocoa extension services across the country. The prices are really good, and farmers are enjoying the benefit of their labor."
