Parkop slams barbaric killing at 8-Mile

NCD Governor Powes Parkop has condemned the recent killings in Port Moresby, particularly at 8-Mile, describing them as 'barbaric acts' that are unacceptable and cannot be tolerated in the city or the country.

His comments follow another gruesome killing last week in which a man was hacked to death with a bush knife, echoing a similar attack the week before.

Governor Parkop expressed regret and sadness over the loss of life, stressing that his administration has gone beyond legal and political means to support police in restoring safety and security for residents and visitors.

He highlighted the installation of more than 300 CCTV cameras across the city, equipped with infrared lighting and artificial intelligence capacity, as part of a broader push to strengthen surveillance.

Parkop revealed that a Rapid Response Unit is being established to either prevent crimes or ensure swift arrests when incidents occur.

“I have been pushing for this capacity to be in place as soon as possible, and I want to assure city residents we are almost there,” he said.

The Governor noted that these measures complement existing initiatives, including the funding and deployment of City Wardens, Pom City Watch, and neighborhood watch programs.

Together, these efforts are designed to back up regular police operations and extend security coverage to settlements such as 8-Mile.

“We are determined to bring the highest level of safety and security to Port Moresby,” Parkop affirmed.
Meanwhile, police in NCD are yet to establish full details behind the latest killing and have not apprehended suspects.
