PNG development pipeline tested in international clash

The depth of Papua New Guinea's rugby league pathway faces a benchmark test this Saturday as the Junior Kumuls and Junior Orchids clash with Australia School Boys and Girls at the Santos National Football Stadium in Port Moresby.

The Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League [PNGRFL] named both national select sides, bringing together the country's top domestic talent and rising Australian system prospects.

PNGRFL Academy and Pathways Manager Joe Grima takes charge of the Junior Kumuls as head coach, bringing extensive experience in elite junior development and previous national junior coaching duties.

Grima said the fixture represents a vital transition point for young players moving from regional development into high-performance environments.

"Being selected in the Junior Kumuls is an important step for these young players and a reward for the work they have put into their development," Grima said.

"Our role is to give them the right environment to develop, compete, and understand what is required to progress through the pathway."

The 18-player Junior Kumuls squad assembled in camp over the weekend following selections from local competitions and elite development programs.

The squad features domestic talent from the Port Moresby Vipers, Central Dabaris, Mt Hagen Eagles, Goroka Lahanis, and Kandes.

They are joined by five overseas-based pathway players currently embedded in Australian programs, including system ranks at the Penrith Panthers, North Queensland Cowboys, Canberra Raiders, Dolphins, and Mabel Park State High School.

"We have players coming through different parts of the system, including the Academy, National Youth Competition, and domestic competitions, as well as players gaining experience overseas," Grima said.
