Opposition calls for immediate swearing-in of new Electoral Commissioner

Opposition Leader James Nomane has urged the Prime Minister and the Chief Secretary to immediately ensure that Papua New Guinea's newly appointed Electoral Commissioner, Professor Nicole Haley, is sworn into office.

In a statement, Mr. Nomane said Professor Haley was appointed by the Electoral Commission's Appointments Committee three weeks ago but has yet to assume office.

He said the issue of writs for the 2027 National General Election is less than nine months away, and her delay in taking office is increasing the risks to election preparations and its successful conduct.

Mr. Nomane said the process of appointing Professor Haley was straightforward and uncontested and should have taken only a few days to complete, not weeks.

He also called on the National Government to introduce a Supplementary Budget during the next sitting of Parliament to ensure adequate funding and timely preparations for the 2027 National General Election.

When contacted, Prime Minister James Marape said the Government is waiting for the Salaries and Remuneration Commission to finalise Professor Haley's contract before she officially takes office.

He added that it is business as usual at the Papua New Guinea Electoral Commission in the meantime.
