District women council elected in Vanimo Green
Vanimo Green District Council of Women has elected its President and executive to represent women in the District and Province for the next five years.
The district becomes the second in West Sepik Province to complete nominations, after Nuku District.
The Elected leaders are, President, Susan Nali representing Bewani Wutung Onei LLG Deputy President, Anna Kane from Green River LLG Secretary, Gerhard Gubon for Vanimo Urban LLG and, Treasurer, Merolyne Yapo for Amanab LLG
Provincial Director for Community Development, Florence Agen, officially opened the nominations and urged the women leaders to be wise and bold in decision making.
"Your work is not only about growing SMEs. Women in this province and country face many issues, starting from Gender Based Violence at home and in workplaces, and even suppressed rights when it comes to voting. You are not just representatives.
“You must use this role and voice these concerns on behalf of all the women you represent in this district, province and country as a whole," said Ms Agen
Agen also called for training to be conducted in each LLG and ward to build the confidence and skills of women leaders.
District Senior Court Magistrate Sasa Ikung administered the oath of office. He told the new leaders that by signing the oath they officially hold office under law and must perform their duties accordingly.
Newly elected President Susan Nali spoke to NBC News after the event.
"I thank God and all my fellow women leaders for entrusting me with this important role. I will do my best with my executive to represent our women well" said Ms Nali
Ms Nali said their first meeting is scheduled for today, Monday 7th September, where LLG and ward women leaders will meet to discuss plans, highlight issues and other areas of concern at the district level.
The District and Provincial Councils of Women are established under the National Council of Women Act 2013.
The Act gives the mandate for women leaders to represent women in government decision making and policy, and provides an avenue for women to voice their concerns as citizens of Papua New Guinea.
