Police operations underway in Western Province following kidnap and murder case

Two teenage girls were reportedly kidnapped by armed criminals in Western Province, with one murdered and the other still being held at gunpoint.

In a statement, Police Commissioner confirmed a specialist operation underway to rescue the surviving girl, and bring those responsible to justice.

Police are conducting a coordinated operation at Haiyafuli Village in Mogulu, Western Province, following reports that two teenage girls were kidnapped and taken hostage by armed criminals.

Police Commissioner David Manning says one of the girls was murdered by her captors, with her remains recovered by Police.

The second girl is believed to be held at another location at gunpoint, as specialist tactical Police continue efforts to locate and rescue her.

One suspected offender has already been shot and killed during the Police response.

Commissioner Manning says Police will use every lawful and necessary means to rescue the surviving girl alive, and has called on the remaining suspects to release her unharmed and surrender.

“This is an ongoing operation in which Police are pursuing dangerous criminals who killed one young woman and continue to hold another girl at gunpoint,” Commissioner Manning confirmed.

“These are desperate individuals who have rejected the basic standards of their own communities and placed themselves outside decent society," he said.

He is also urging communities to support Police by remaining vigilant and refusing to provide shelter or assistance to those responsible.

“Our main priority is the safety and recovery of the young girl they have taken, and Police will use every lawful and necessary means to bring her out alive.

Commissioner Manning says further information will be released as the operation continues.
