Drifting fishermen safe on Tanga, NIP

Authorities in Bougainville are now working to repatriate two fishermen who drifted to Tanga Island in New Ireland Province, after their boat developed engine problems during a tuna fishing trip.

ABG Community Government Secretary, Belinda Maree-Gara Lanbong, confirmed her office is coordinating with relevant agencies to bring the duo safely back to Buka.

The two fishermen, Sekei Musen and Male Gaden, from Lontis in Haku Constituency, survived three days adrift before coming ashore at Sungkin Village on Tanga.

Residents of Boeng Island provided them with food, shelter and assistance.

Reports from Tanga indicate both men are in good health and awaiting arrangements for their return.

Secretary Lanbong also issued a strong warning to the public against sea travel while strong winds continue to affect Bougainville waters.

Travellers are urged to notify the Bougainville Disaster and Emergency Office before departure and report back after completing their journey so authorities can monitor their safety.
