“Nurses are the backbone of the healthcare system in this nation.”

Those were the words of Kerema General Hospital Manager Jim Lapai during the hospital’s International Nurses Day celebration held on Friday in Kerema town.

Mr Lapai highlighted the critical role nurses play across the province and country, saying nursing is more than just a profession.

“Nursing is not just a job, it is a calling and requires a unique blend of statistical knowledge and profound empathy,” he said.

Nurses from Kerema General Hospital commemorated the occasion with a march parade through Kerema town, dressed in uniform and proudly displaying their profession to the general public before proceeding to the designated area for the program.

A minute of silence was also observed to honor nurses who have passed away and are not present today.

Dr Kanandru Pondros, Director of Curative Health Services, said the day is important to recognize the commitment, dedication and sacrifice nurses make to patient care.

Due to the hospital’s recent transition, the celebration was postponed from the official date of May 12 to Friday, June 5.

This year’s theme is “Our Nurses, Our Future - Empowered Nurses, Save Lives.”

The CEO and board of Kerema General Hospital provided K20,000 to support the event.
