Counting for the New Ireland Provincial By-election completed its first day at 6pm on Saturday, with 25 ballot boxes from five Local-Level Governments (LLGs) successfully counted.

The ballot boxes counted were from Tanir, Nimamar, Namatanai, Sentral Niu Ailan, and Tikana LLGs, with five boxes from each LLG.

After counting, all ballot boxes were sealed and securely locked away in a container.

Counting is taking place at the Peter Torot Centre in Kavieng.

Provincial Police Commander Chief Superintendent Albert Beli said police, together with Correctional Service officers, provided tight security at the counting centre.

"After day one Police, together with CS officers, provided tight security around the counting centre. Thus, there was control and respect of the area and counting officials by the general public."

Meanwhile, Election Manager Benjamin Kliawi thanked all counting officials for their efforts on day one.

Counting resumes today at 1 pm.
