The timing of the postponed Local Level Government [LLG] Elections, scheduled for September 27, has sparked concerns from parents and educators, particularly as it clashes with the national education calendar.

Among those raising alarm is Alfie Mori, a concerned father from Chuave, who fears the elections may disrupt preparations for critical national examinations.

Mori, whose two children are sitting for the Grade 10 and Grade 12 national exams at Yauwe Moses Secondary School this year, said the election timing was concerning.

"Instead of wasting precious time and energy on political distractions, let’s prioritize the future of our children, their education, their exams, and their success," Mori said.

He said the deferred election period could bring about significant disruptions to the learning environment. Campaign activities, loud rallies, and the potential for election-related conflict or tribal tensions, may cause stress and loss of focus for students during this critical academic period.

"Education must remain the top priority," the concerned parent said. "The government must weigh the importance of academic performance and avoid creating conditions that compromise our children’s future."

With Grades 8, 10, and 12 scheduled to sit for national examinations during the same period, Mori is calling for communities, parents, and leaders to shift their focus towards supporting students instead of engaging in divisive political activity.

"Education is the true foundation of lasting development, not empty elections with no value-added returns," he said.

Mori's appeal adds to the growing calls for greater alignment between national event scheduling and education priorities. He urged the government to consider rescheduling the elections or ensuring strict controls to prevent disturbances during the exam period.
