Simbu police parade highlights years of dedication amidst challenges

Simbu police held a provincial parade today to mark their role in the lead-up to Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence celebrations. The event served not only as a ceremonial display of discipline, but also as a moment of reflection on the legacy and sacrifices made by the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary [RPNGC] over the decades.

Speaking at the parade, Simbu Provincial Police Commander [PPC] Superintendent Mazuc Rubiang said the occasion was an opportunity for officers to honour their service and recommit to their mission of law enforcement and community protection.

“This parade is not just about marching in unison. It’s a time to reflect on our journey of protecting lives, property, and public institutions, and to renew our solemn promise to serve with integrity,” Supt Rubiang said.

He acknowledged the national significance of the 50th anniversary of independence and highlighted the RPNGC’s deep historical roots, tracing its origins back to the formation of the first armed native constabulary in 1890.

“In those early days, our pioneer officers, village constables, walked the rugged mountains and valleys of Simbu, bringing law and order with courage and resilience,” he said.

Rubiang reflected on the unique challenges faced by police in the Highlands, including tribal conflicts, election-related violence, and the logistical difficulties posed by tough terrain.

“Despite these obstacles, our officers have consistently stood on the front lines to restore peace and order,” he said.

The PPC also thanked the Simbu Provincial Government for its ongoing logistical and financial support, saying it had been crucial in enabling officers to continue their work during challenging times.

“With strong partnerships, I am confident we will overcome the challenges of the next 50 years and keep Simbu safe and peaceful,” he added.

Simbu Governor Noah Kool, delivering the keynote address, paid tribute to both former and current police personnel for their steadfast service and community impact. He reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to supporting police efforts in maintaining law and order.

“We value your contribution and will continue to partner with you in building a safer Simbu,” Governor Kool said.

The parade was part of the RPNGC’s wider series of commemorative events ahead of the nation’s Golden Jubilee on September 16, 2025.
