West Sepik expresses sorrow

West Sepik Governor Tony Wouwou, on behalf of the people of West Sepik, has shared their sorrow over the death of the head of Roman Catholic Church His Holiness, Pope Francis who passed away yesterday, Monday, April 21.
Governor Wouwou said, “Pope Francis was more than a religious leader. He was a strong voice for humility, compassion, and justice around the world. He always stood up for the poor and spoke out about protecting the environment. His actions and words inspired many people across the globe.”
The Governor said the province felt deeply honoured to welcome Pope Francis during his historic visit to Papua New Guinea in September 2024.
He said the Pope’s presence in Vanimo showed a powerful message of unity and hope—something the people will always remember.
Father Miguel from the Vanimo Diocese also shared his condolences on behalf of the Catholic Church and its members in the area.
He said Pope Francis truly cared for people living in remote parts of the province.
“Pope Francis had a heart for people in the bush—those in the most remote parts of West Sepik. We saw this clearly when he visited Vanimo in September last year,” Father Miguel said.
He said the Pope helped start several projects in the province. One of them is Baro Junior High School, which the Pope visited during his trip to Vanimo.
Father Miguel also said the Pope’s death during Easter Week is no accident. As Christians around the world celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus, he believes that Pope Francis will also rise again to be with the Lord.
