PNG Football Association general secretary Ahmjad Tekwie expressed confidence in the team and urged the future football stars to represent PNG with pride.

“To our incredible PNG U-16 team, as you embark on this journey to Raratonga for the OFC Qualifying Tournament, know that the entire Papua New Guinea Football Association, from President John Kapi Natto and the Executive Committee to Chief Operating Officer Stanley Khanna and all our staff, stands firmly behind you," he reaffirmed PNGFA's support.

“We believe in your talent and dedication. Go out there, focus on your game, and play with all your heart. There's no pressure, just opportunity. This all-female junior women team, from management to players, marks a special moment for our nation's football.

"Just make the country proud in Cook Islands, and let this be the first step towards a successful Championship in October. Give it your absolute best!"

Coach Wadunah said most of the players in the team were rookies selected from the local comps around the country and were excited to compete at international level.

“We were supposed to take 19 players but one fell ill so she had to stay back. Our team is made up of all females.” Wadunah said.

Preparations for the OFC event started last month across three centres in Madang, Lae and Port Moresby.

Wadunah said the PNG U16 female side was assembled last week in the nation's capital, for final touches prior to departing.

“Training took place in the different centres before we all met in Port Moresby for team bonding,” she added.

PNG will meet hosts Cook Islands in the first match on Saturday (April 26) before facing American Samoa next week Tuesday.

Wadunah said the main objective of the tean is to qualifyby giving their best performance against quality opponents.
