A young man in Madang has been arrested and charged for allegedly impersonating the Madang Provincial Administrator.

Police have identified the young man to be Junior Kunda Kevin, aged 28, from Yandera Village in Usino/ Bundi District.

Police said his action sought to disrupt official administrative processes.

Junior Kunda Kevin was arrested last Friday afternoon. His arrest follows an investigation into an alleged fraudulent letter intended to undermine the authority of the Acting Provincial Administrator, Daniel Aloi.

The letter, dated April 8, 2025 and delivered on April 10, 2025 to the Madang Provincial Treasury Office and Bank South Pacific, Madang Branch casts doubt on Mr Aloi’s legitimacy, thereby misleading critical financial and administrative operations.

Police confirmed that the author of the letter was the former Provincial Administrator, Frank Tonges Lau.

Madang’s Provincial Police Commander, Acting Superintendent Robert Baim stated, that the arrest was made based on substantial legal evidence.

He said, “Junior Kunda Kevin deliberately misled government institutions by using false claims to impersonate a public office holder. Police investigations have also revealed that the letter referenced an outdated court order that had been dismissed by the National Court on March 7, 2025”.

The suspect has been charged with one count of impersonating a public officer under Section 97 of the PNG Criminal Code Act. He was released on a one thousand and five hundred kina police bail yesterday afternoon and will appear in court soon.

PPC Baim said, “There are no ongoing court matters relating to the case. The suspect’s actions not only contravene the law but also pose a serious threat to the administration and financial functions of the Madang Provincial Administration”.

He added impersonating public servants to interfere with official processes is unacceptable.

Acting Superintendent Baim also emphasised the importance of adhering to proper communication channels in administrative matters.

He warned any individual attempting to disrupt government operations will face legal repercussions.

Baim also urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation and to uphold the rule of law and administrative procedures within the province.
