A landslide that occurred last night in Mendi, Southern Highlands destroyed crops and several homes and properties.

No casualties have been reported from the natural disaster which happened between 11pm and 1am in Karinz LLG of Mendi Munihu District.

Bela-Hiep ward one councilor Israel Wari informed NBC News that the natural hazard has entirely obliterated a gathering area (ples singsing) for the Dol Kupa community along with food gardens and few houses.

Wari confirmed that there were no fatalities as the homes had already been vacated due to visible earth cracks that raised concerns about a potential landslide.

He said the area destructed was important for the community where they gather firewood, obtain water, and cultivate food.

“The landslide will lead to widespread starvation among the people. It’s a major disaster for the community,” he told NBC News.

Dr. Newton Albert, who is affectionately known as Dol Kupa after his village, expressed his distress over the incident, recalling fond memories of his childhood spent in those areas.

“A large expanse of our people’s food gardens has been devastated. The entire area, now buried under mud, is the fertile crescent renowned for its diverse food crop production. Our community’s food security is at serious risk now,” Dr. Albert said.

He urged all relevant government stakeholders to assist in response to this relentless natural disaster.

As a member of the community, he pledged to organize immediate food relief supplies.

“I appeal to all other responsible agencies to join in and provide assistance wherever possible,” he added.
