Wong: We remain with Marape by choice, not coercion

Fisheries Minister Jelta Wong has defended Prime Minister James Marape against claims of dictatorial leadership, reaffirming that Members of Parliament in Government stand with him out of conviction, not coercion.

Minister Wong, speaking on behalf of the government coalition said Prime Minister Marape has never acted in a forceful or authoritarian manner but instead continues to lead through consultation, respect, and consensus in line with Melanesian leadership values.

“Let me be absolutely clear – no man has been forced, manipulated or threatened to remain on the government side. We are here of our own free will, and we have made a conscious choice in support of Prime Minister Marape, not out of fear, but because we know him best,” Minister Wong said.

Wong described Marape as a Melanesian leader who respects all regions, people and their views based on culture, tribe and politics.

The Gazelle MP brushed aside confusion amongst them, reaffirming that government remains unified and grounded in principles of respect, consultation, and stability.

Minister Wong pointed out that Party’s on the government side particularly the larger number who remain with Prime Minister Marape – have had close, daily insight into his work ethic, personality, and leadership style over the years.

“This is not about party lines. This is about leadership style, values, and consistency. Prime Minister Marape is not just leading Pangu; he is leading a coalition of diverse parties and has treated all with the same level of respect.”

The Deputy Party Leader of the United Resources Party also challenged the Opposition to come clean about the real forces behind their constant change of alternate Prime Minister nominees.

Wong reaffirmed the government’s commitment to Prime Minister Marape’s leadership up to the 2027 national elections.
