5 fishery facilities opened for Milne Bay

It’s been called a ‘defining moment for coastal fisheries’ in Papua New Guinea, as 5 fishery facilities opened simultaneously in Alotau today.

Minister for Fisheries and Marine Resources Jelta Wong had the honors, he says much of the investment here is premise on the favorable conditions and business environment set in the province attracting investors to setup here, most of them spending millions of Kina to build these facilities and enabling markets at the doorsteps of the people of Milne Bay.

And the National Fisheries Authority is throwing support behind the Milne Bay Provincial Government for this.

Minister Wong today commissioned the five fishery facilities that will be engaging local community, they were each presented support to begin this work immediately including the Flyig Talhang Mountain Live Fish Facility, exporters of live fish.

The ASL Sandfish Hatchery, borne of the moratorium idea, generating sea cucumbers and exporting live.

The NFA Seaweed Processing Facility and Office Complex to be manned by the local Division of Fisheries & Livestock.

The Boboana Frozen Fish and Seaweed Holding Facility who recently shipped of a first 33tons of seaweed to China.

And the Gunumara Fish and Mud Crab Holding Facility for live exports too.

Milne Bay Governor Gordon Henry Wesley welcomed these much-anticipatedBob facilities for his maritime province.

He says no great achievement is gained in isolation and that this was the result of strong public private partnerships from all stakeholders, thanking regulator NFA for their support and licensing for these operations to commence.

Wong, who had arrived this morning for the event, returned soon after to Port Moresby this afternoon.
