With growing concerns over legal accountability in Papua New Guinea, the PNG Law Society is proposing key reforms to strengthen the rule of law.

Following its Rule of Law march this morning in Port Moresby, the Law Society has put forward two major initiatives:

First, it seeks recognition as an authority under Section 19 of the Constitution, enabling it to challenge unconstitutional decisions.

Second, it aims to become a prosecuting authority under Section 176 and Section 616 of the Criminal Code to improve law enforcement and prevent corruption.

Senior lawyer, Ben Lomai, who raised these recommendations, believes these changes would fill gaps left by weak enforcement agencies and restore public trust in the justice system.

He urged the PNG Law Society to progress discussions with the Attorney General and other stakeholders.
