West Tigers center Justin Olam has today announced his immediate retirement from rugby league due to injury, following a knee injury suffered in Round 18 of the 2024 NRL season.

The 31-year-old fan favourite has made the difficult decision after extensive consultation with medical staff, bringing to a close a remarkable playing career that inspired fans and teammates.

Olam featured in 13 matches for the Wests Tigers in 2024 and has been a force in the NRL since making his debut in 2018.

A proud Papua New Guinean international and trailblazer for his country, Olam played 117 NRL games, leaving an incredible legacy both on and off the field.

From humble beginnings in the remote PNG village of Gon to lifting the 2020 NRL Premiership trophy with the Melbourne Storm, Olam’s journey is a story of grit, determination and heart.

He made 104 appearances for the Storm, received the Dally M Centre of the Year award in 2021, and had countless memorable moments representing Papua New Guinea on the international stage.

Renowned for his fearless defence, explosive running, and unwavering work ethic, Olam retires as one of the most respected and admired players of his generation.

"I came here hoping just to play one game, and I’ve been blessed a hundred times over to have played more than 100," says Olam.

"Hopefully, I can inspire a young kid—whether here or back home in PNG—to chase their dreams.

"With God, anything is possible. I wish I could keep playing, but my body just won’t allow it anymore.

"I believe everything happens for a reason. At the end of the day, it’s God’s plan.

"Thank you to all my friends, family, and anyone who has supported me throughout my rugby league journey—I appreciate you all."

Wests Tigers Head Coach Benji Marshall was full of praise when reflecting on Olam's career.

"We congratulate Justin on an incredible career in the NRL and for Papua New Guinea," said Marshall.

"He will go down as one of the greatest—if not the greatest—players to represent PNG. It’s been an absolute privilege having Justin at our Club, and we wish him and his family all the very best in the next chapter of their journey. "

Wests Tigers CEO Shane Richardson also paid tribute to the retiring star.

"Justin is an icon of international rugby league, and he is the king of PNG rugby league."

This Sunday at Campbelltown Sports Stadium, the club will celebrate and thank Justin for his incredible contribution to Wests Tigers.

Tigers will also be honoring Justin's career alongside the Melbourne Storm in the Round 10 clash at AAMI Park on Sunday, 11th May — another special opportunity to acknowledge his achievements and legacy.
