Defence Minister’s vision for education and workforce development

Defence Minister Dr Billy Joseph has revealed intentions to transform the Joint Forces colleges [JFC] at Igam Barracks into an established regional education institution.
He made this proposal while visiting the Igam Barracks in Lae recently.
Dr Joseph says the proposed establishment of the educational institution to be known as the Melanesian Security College represents a crucial step forward in enhancing the capabilities of the Papua New Guinea Defence Force [PNGDF].
"By transforming the Joint Forces Command [JFC] into a degree-granting institution, the quality of education will be elevated significantly and will be available for military personnel and other security forces who wish to attend".
This initiative is vital not only for the professional development of soldiers but also for strengthening national security through a more knowledgeable and skilled defence force.
PNGDF trade training school: empowering youth for a stronger future
The Defence ministry is also planning to revive the PNGDF Trade Training School in partnership with a TAFE agency and the National Volunteer Service [NVS] of PNG.
Minister Dr Billy Joseph says this collaboration aims to provide essential vocational training to unemployed youth who are searching for opportunities.
Once the PNGDF Trade Training School is revived and fully operational, it will prepare youths for roles within the PNGDF Reserve Force and facilitate their entry into the workforce through the NVS placement program.
Dr Joseph believes in investing in the education and training of the young population as it will empower and equip them with skills needed for both military service and civilian employment.
"These initiatives and others underline a comprehensive approach to national defence and workforce development and demonstrate the national government's commitment to building a resilient and capable future for Papua New Guinea".
