The Connect PNG program, aims to upgrade national highways and improve access to economic opportunities. However, local MPs are questioning why some of the most-used economic roads are not being prioritized.

The Member for Kainantu, William Hagahuno, in Parliament today raised a question to the Minister responsible for Works and Highways, Solan Mirism, seeking clarification on the K87 million allocated for the upgrade of the Kainantu, Lufa, Okapa, and Bena roads.

MP Hagahuno said this road is the economic road for Eastern Highlands as these districts produce coffee to PNG markets and overseas and it must be given priority.

"In our provincial assembly meeting last year, we received information that the government has committed K87 million to upgrade and seal this road.

"I want to know if this money has already been allocated, and if not why? If it was allocated then please let us know when it will be released so the project can begin," Hagahuno said.

Minister for Works and Highways Solan Mirism agreed to the Kainantu MP's points however, said the project was delayed due to some issues faced.

"Under connect PNG we are fully aware of this road. This road is funded under ADB [Asian Development Bank] and we wanted to work on this road, but one officer was killed there, and they pulled out, that was the only delay, but we are still working on it.

"Very soon we will put this project up on tender and will fund this through ADB so we are on to this."

Minister Mirism also said apart from this road, they are working on the Obura- Wonenara road and another road in Kainantu.

"Very soon we will award a lane contract in Goroka town," Minister Mirisim said
