First woman takes Speaker chair in 50 years of independence

As assistant speaker, North Bougainville MP, Francesca Semoso made history today as the first female member of Parliament to chair the proceedings this morning.
This after almost 50 years of Independence.
Ms. Semoso performed the role of speaker with confidence, calling the house to order and starting the business of the day, with petitions and notices, then onto the traditional 45-minutes questions and answers session.
Before the first question by Bogia MP Robert Naguri to Trade and Investment Minister Richard Maru, he congratulated her.
Maru prior to giving his response, also congratulated Ms. Semoso.
Deputy Opposition leader James Nomane described Semoso's chairing of Parliament as a progression for women and girls in the country.
Several other MPs and ministers congratulated Semoso throughout the Question and answer session, which was extended for an additional 20 minutes.
The no-nonsense leader with her background as former speaker of the Bougainville House of representatives commanded the house and conducted the parliamentary business of the day.
She made a point about being fair to both sides of the house and also reminded members that her role as assistant speaker is deciding who is chosen to ask their question or speak.
