Nation’s capital to face water disruption for 27 days
Tuesday, 7 January 2025, 1:21 pm
Port Moresby residents will face citywide water rationing for the next three weeks to allow Water PNG to carry out critical repairs and maintenance on the Mt. Eriama Treatment Plant’s Clarifier 2.
This planned disruption which started yesterday would be carried out from January 6 – 26 as most parts of the city face water limiting.
Water PNG announced the rationing schedule to ensure essential services remain operational while maintenance work is completed.
The maintenance is necessary to sustain the treatment plant's long-term efficiency and ensure the city’s water supply system functions optimally.
Residents are urged to take note of the rationing zones and schedules where the city has been divided into four major areas:
Area 1: Includes locations such as 3-Mile, Taurama, and Murray Barracks.
Area 2: Covers Waigani, Boroko East, and the Parliament House vicinity.
Area 3: Includes Gerahu, 4-Mile, and Gordon Industrial.
Area 4: Includes Tokarara, Morata, and Hohola.
The controlling roster alternates water supply between zones, for instance, areas 1 and 3 will have water from 12 midnight to 6 am, while regions 2 and 4 will be off during that time.
The schedule shifts throughout the day with water restored to certain zones for set periods to minimize the impact.
For settlement and village zones, water supply will also rotate during specified time frames, ensuring equitable access for all communities.
Water PNG apologizes for the inconvenience caused and urges residents to store water during supply hours and use it wisely.
They emphasize that these maintenance works are essential to deliver a sustainable and reliable water supply in the future.
