Hundreds turn out to the UPNG Waigani campus to celebrate today

The University of Papua New Guinea celebrated its 49th Independence anniversary at the Vice Chancellor Oval.

Today's celebration marked the journey of this great nation. As an institution, UPNG remains committed to educating the future leaders of Papua New Guinea, and it celebrates the momentous occasion with style.

Cultural diversity was on full display as students from across the country performed traditional dances, showcasing the vibrant heritage of Papua New Guinea’s 22 provinces.

From the powerful war dances of the Highlands to the graceful dances of Western and Sepik, each performance celebrated the rich cultural traditions that unite the people of PNG.

UPNG SRC president Joel Rimbu expressed his gratitude for today's turnout.

"The students take Independence as a significant moment and we're celebrating with pride," Joel Rimbu said.

Students spoke of their pride in celebrating this important day, reflecting on what independence means to them.

"I am happy to be part of this significant occasion and to celebrate this Independence," Gilson Mawa said.

Rimbu added that Independence Day is a reminder of our freedom and the potential we have to contribute to the development of our country.

He said students come from different places, but when we come together here, they are united by our identity as Papua New Guineans.

Today's celebrations ended around 5pm.
