The Papua New Guinea and Autonomous Bougainville Government have agreed for Sir Jerry MateparaUe to take up an independent moderator role in resolving Bougainville issues.

The decision on his appointment was agreed during a joint supervisory board meeting earlier this year [May 2024] after going through his credentials.

Sir Jerry previously served as the Governor General of New Zealand and as NZ High Commissioner to United Kingdom.

He also had a long and distinguished military career including serving as NZ's Chief of Defense Force.

Sir Jerry has extensive experience in peace monitoring in conflict and post-conflict environments in East Timor but most notably he served as a commander of the peace monitoring group in Bougainville and has a first-hand understanding of PNG and Bougainville.

Meanwhile, there's an administrative process to follow but as of now PNG and ABG leaders look forward to working with Sir Jerry.

Also in this cause, United Nations is also supporting the government's in navigating a mutually successful conclusion to the Bougainville peace process.
