Kumul great to headline fundraising events to support local charity

Former PNG Kumuls captain David Mead will join a host of teams to help raise funds for a local charity in Port Moresby.
The ex NRL star will attend a dinner and charity golf tournament where funds raised from the two events will go towards supporting the Gateway Children’s Fund School in Moitaka settlement, established to provide assistance for the nation’s capital impoverished children.
The Christian based and privately funded school caters for over 250 children who every week receive basic healthcare, literacy, education, and daily meals, to improve their personal wellbeing, and that of the communities.
Additionally, 50 mothers directly benefit from the program each week, while other mothers and children are helped indirectly.
Mr Mead will share the podium at the Chairman’s Sports Dinner tomorrow at the Hilton Hotel, with highly regarded Australian sports journalist Kendall Gilding.
The former Titans try-scoring ace who is also an ambassador of the Sir Brian Bell Foundation will then take part in the charity golf tournament at the Royal Port Moresby Golf Club this Friday.
He will play in the foundation team as part of corporate bodies participating in the fundraiser.
“I attended the dinner in 2023 and this year I’m looking forward to getting out on the course myself, and helping with fundraising efforts,” Mr Mead said.
The Sir Brian Bell Foundation has been assisting Gateway Children’s Fund for two years as major sponsor of their corporate fundraising initiative.
In 2018, additional funding was also provided to build their classroom to help expand classes and grade levels offered.
Chairman of the organizing events Pastor Rick Paynter acknowledged the continued support in ensuring funds are gathered to continue the charity work.
“We thank our sponsors and corporate donors whose generosity makes these events possible,” he said.
“This September it’s all about raising funds to help kids and families escape the cycle of poverty and have better lives.”
