Pomat urge citizens to protect National Parliament

The 40th Anniversary of the Papua New Guinea National Parliament was celebrated on Thursday [today].
The celebration at the Parliament House was observed by the Speaker Job Pomat, Clark of National Parliament Kala Aufa, State Ministers, Diplomatic Corp and bureaucrats.
The celebration marks a significant milestone for the country as the Parliament House stands as a symbol of democracy and unity, and house leaders sit and drive this country.
The Speaker of the Parliament Job Pomat during his keynote address at the ceremony made a call to the citizens to respect and protect the National Parliament in times of political instability, economic crisis and other social issues that affect livelihood.
Speaker Job Pomat said during his term in Parliament there were two attempts' people made to destroy the Parliament and this has to stop.
"The citizens always come to the Parliament to destroy the house. Let's be mindful that when we destroy the Parliament, we have no country. Put everything outside and always respect the house because that is where Laws will be made to address issues affecting the country," Pomat said.
He urged the leaders to educate the people, so they understand the significance of the Houses.
Mr. Pomat in his remarks also appreciated the Australian Government for their enduring partnership to the PNG Government in building the National Parliament.
"I thank the Australian Government for building the National Parliament. Even till today Australia is our very closest friend and at this time we recognize and acknowledge our on-going collaboration and partnership," Pomat added.
Meanwhile the Opposition Leader Douglas Toumeriesa who was also given the opportunity to speak at the occasion made a strong call to all members of Parliament to serve people wholeheartedly.
The celebration today was colorful as traditional dancers from various provinces display their authentic culture complemented with traditional attire, showcasing a true spirit of patriotism and pride.
