Hela Provincial Headquarter in Tari now has access to high-speed fibre optic internet connectivity through the fibre optic network constructed by Tebian Electric Apparatus [TBEA] alongside the 132kV power transmission line from Mount Hagen to Tari.

Governor Philip Undialu says the first institutions connected to the new network are the Hela Provincial Treasury and Tari General Hospital. He said this development will enhance the efficiency of public service delivery, efficient financial management systems, healthcare services, and communication capabilities across key government agencies.

“Importantly, Hela Province is strategically positioned to benefit from two separate fibre optic networks. The first fibre optic network is the TBEA fibre installed along the Mount Hagen–Tari transmission line, which is now operational and progressively being connected to government offices and institutions,” he said.

Governor Undialu stressed that the second fibre optic network was installed alongside the PNG LNG pipeline corridor from Port Moresby to Hides. This fibre network terminates at Hides and comprises multiple fibre pairs. Under the existing arrangements, the Hela Provincial Government owns one fibre pair while PNG DataCo owns two fibre pairs.

He said once the power transmission line extension reaches Hides 4 and the necessary interconnection infrastructure is completed, Hela Province will have access to its own dedicated fibre optic capacity through its ownership interest in the PNG LNG fibre network.

“The Hela Provincial Government intends to work closely with PNG DataCo to establish appropriate collaboration and operating arrangements to maximize the use of this critical digital infrastructure for government services, businesses, educational institutions, health facilities, and the people of Hela Province”, Governor Undialu said.

He stressed that the fibre optic infrastructure forms part of Hela’s long-term vision to transform the province into a digitally connected economy, improving access to information, government services, and education, healthcare, and investment opportunities.

“As the rollout continues, Tari Township and other districts throughout the province will progressively gain access to reliable, high-speed internet services, creating new opportunities for economic growth, innovation, and improved service delivery.

Governor Undialu also indicated that he has ordered over 300 Starlink satellites discs to cover schools and health facilities in rural areas where fiber optic cables cannot reach.
