Parkop calls for visionary leadership ahead of 2027 polls

Governor of National Capital District and Social Democratic Party [SDP] leader Powes Parkop has called on Papua New Guinea’s political parties to focus on developing visionary leadership, credible policies, and practical solutions ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

Speaking at the 6th Political Party Expo, Parkop acknowledged key dignitaries present, including Registrar of Political Parties Emmanuel Pok, Administrative Services Minister Richard Masere, and United Nations Resident Coordinator Shalini Bahuguna.

On behalf of the SDP, Parkop congratulated the Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates Commission [IPPCC] for its 25 years of work in strengthening political parties and building the capacity of leaders across the country.

Established in 2011, the SDP has contested three national elections. Parkop said the party is now preparing for its fourth election, working alongside other political entities to improve its standing and parliamentary representation.

He encouraged parties to compete strongly during campaigns, but stressed that political differences must not prevent leaders from uniting for the nation's interest.

“The most important thing is that we must think about our country and our people and come together, no matter which party we belong to,” Parkop said.

The NCD governor added that the ultimate responsibility of political parties is to provide the direction, leadership, and inspiration needed to advance Papua New Guinea for current and future generations.
