Haze smoke experienced in Port Moresby
Hazy smoke has been evident in the skies of Port Moresby for past days.
The National Weather Service has explained that the smoky appearance maybe caused by smoke, airborne particles or weather conditions, which are slow in dispersing.
At this time of the year, the Weather Service also noted that Port Moresby is usually affected by dry southeasterly winds which can limit the amount of moisture available for rainfall.
The National Weather Service is yet to confirm the exact cause of the haze smoke being experienced in Port Moresby.
It indicated that the smoky appearance maybe caused by smoke, airborne particles or weather conditions, which are slow in dispersing.
The office noted that haze is heavy during the morning hours when very small particles float in the air and make it difficult to see clearly over long distances.
And, this comes especially from burning grass, bushfires, rubbish, dust from roads among others.
Haze can be harmful to people’s health and therefore the weather office is encouraging people to take precautionary measures like wearing face masks or stay indoors.
Meantime, in a separate report to the National Newspaper, the Weather Service Assistant Director Kasis Inape says the hazy conditions could be associated with fires from Indonesia however further analysis of satellite imagery, fire locations and prevailing wind patterns is required to establish its actual origin.
