The international Catholic movement, Jesus Youth; continues to expand its presence in Papua New Guinea, with young people at Divine Word University actively living out their faith through service, prayer, and outreach.

On Sunday, April 19, members of the Divine Word University Catholic Students, under Jesus Youth PNG, carried out a compassionate visit to the surgical and labour wards at the Madang Provincial Hospital.

The outreach was led by Jesus Youth coordinator Nicholas Gamuna, assisted by Absalom Ruene, as they guided a team of students committed to sharing both material and spiritual support with patients.

During the visit, the students delivered essential items, including soap, water, sanitary pads for mothers, biscuits, and other basic supplies prepared through their collective efforts.

The initiative was also supported by DWU staff, whose contributions helped make the outreach possible.

Speaking after the visit, Gamuna said the mission was not only about giving physical items but also about bringing hope and comfort to those in need.

“We came not just to give, but to connect, to pray, and to remind our brothers and sisters that they are not alone in their sufferings,” he said.

Inside the wards, the group spent time praying with patients, sharing the Word of God, and offering encouragement. The response from patients was deeply emotional, with many visibly moved during the prayers.

“Some of them were in tears while we prayed together. It really touched our hearts as students. In that moment, we realized that what many of them need is not only medical treatment but spiritual support and hope," Gamuna said.

He stressed that while medical care is essential, faith plays a powerful role in healing and recovery.

“Medicine treats the body, but God heals the heart and gives peace. When people turn to Him, they find strength even in their weakest moments,” he added.

Gamuna described the experience as eye-opening for the students, reinforcing the importance of compassion, service, and faith in action.

The Jesus Youth movement, which is already active in more than 40 countries, is still in its early stages at Divine Word University and currently based in Madang.

However; its impact is beginning to be felt amongst students who are eager to serve and grow in their faith.

“We are a young movement here, but our mission is strong. We want to encourage more youths, students, and even families to be part of this journey , to experience the joy of serving and worshipping the Lord, Gamuna said.

He added that such outreach programs will continue as part of their commitment to reaching out to communities and spreading God’s love beyond the university.

“Our goal is simple , "to bring Christ to people and people to Christ. This is just the beginning for Jesus Youth in PNG,” he said.
