Papua New Guinea’s cocoa industry took the spotlight today as the Greater Sepik Cocoa of Excellence & Trade Expo officially opened in Wewak, drawing farmers, leaders, and international partners together in a strong show of unity.

The opening brought together key leaders, including New Zealand High Commissioner Georgina Roberts, East Sepik Governor Allan Bird, Public Service Minister and Nuku MP Joe Sungi, and Wewak MP Stanley Samban.

Adding to the excitement were 13 international partners, chocolatiers, boutique chocolate owners, buyers, and traders who travelled from Europe, Asia, America, Australia, and New Zealand. Their presence highlights the growing global interest in Papua New Guinea cocoa.

Wewak MP Stanley Samban officially welcomed guests, while Cocoa Board of PNG CEO Jesse Anjen thanked provinces and districts for their support in making the event happen.

Governor Allan Bird also thanked international partners and leaders for their continued support in developing agriculture in the country.

The event showed strong national participation, with farmers from all six districts of East Sepik: Wewak, Maprik, Angoram, Ambunti-Dreikikir, Yangoru-Saussia, and Wosera-Gawi, joining others from West Sepik and cocoa-growing provinces like Morobe, Madang, Milne Bay, Central, Western Highlands, Jiwaka, and Chimbu.

More than ten provinces are now in Wewak, with both provincial and district teams taking part, highlighting the scale and importance of the Expo. Milne Bay Province is also on the ground to defend its title, adding to the competitive spirit.

The event follows the final judging of 59 top cocoa samples, assessed to international standards. The top three winners will be announced on April 23, the final day of the Expo.

As it continues, the Expo is not only showcasing high-quality cocoa but also showing how agriculture brings Papua New Guinea together, connecting farmers, markets, and international partners on one platform.
