Marape orders halt to internal PNGDF investigation
Prime Minister James Marape has ordered an immediate stop to all internal Papua New Guinea Defence Force [PNGDF] investigations regarding the filming and distribution of videos related to recent recruitment controversies.
The directive follows reports of soldiers protesting and blocking roads outside the Murray Barracks headquarters late Tuesday night.
Prime Minister Marape, acting in his capacity as the Caretaker Defence Minister, advised the PNGDF Commander to suspend internal inquiries. He stated that all matters must instead be handled by the National Executive Council [NEC] sanctioned independent review.
"The independent review will be fair, transparent, and comprehensive," Marape said. "It will cover all issues, including recruitment practices and any allegations raised."
The Prime Minister called for calm and immediate discipline within the ranks, urging all personnel to return to their duties. While promising a fair process, he issued a stern warning to those continuing to engage in disorderly conduct.
"Those who continue to defy these directives and engage in unlawful or disorderly conduct risk being identified and subjected to disciplinary actions, including dismissal," the Prime Minister said.
The independent investigation team, which includes the Chief Secretary, State Solicitor, and high-level members of the Australian Defence Force, has already commenced its inquiry into the recruitment process.
