Eight buried in landslide in Central Bougainville
Eight people have been killed in a landslide in inland Central Bougainville, following devastating heavy rains from Tropical Cyclone Maila.
The incident happened at Asiko Village in Kongara Constituency Central Bougainville.
The deceased includes a family and other people.
Reports received by NBC News say the tragedy struck early Thursday [April 9] evening.
A couple, their son and grandchild, along with others were killed in the landslide.
Their bodies have been recovered and will be given proper burials today [Sunday, April 12].
Twelve other people, including a pregnant mother, are being hospitalized for injuries at the local Kakusida Health Centre.
Roads in the constituency have also been cut off as a result of flooding, and food gardens reportedly damaged as well.
The Bougainville Copper Limited has responded to the tragedy, delivering food supplies and other items to families of the deceased.
A government assessment is underway to determine the immediate extent of damage and destruction across the region.
