The enforcement of traffic laws will officially commence on April 1 (Wednesday), with police and enforcement agencies working together to ensure compliance and public safety.

Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police, NCD/Central Chief Superintendent Benjamin Turi, confirmed that the Waigani Police Station cell block will now be used to detain traffic offenders once they are arrested and charged.

He thanked the Road Traffic Authority (RTA) for funding the renovation of the facility, stressing that enforcement officers must take their responsibilities seriously.

Turi emphasized that awareness campaigns have already been conducted, yet many vehicle owners, drivers, and crews continue to ignore the rules. Police are monitoring defective vehicles and other traffic violations closely.

“Bus stops are for picking up and dropping off passengers—not for buses to park and create long lines,” Turi said. “PMV buses must complete their routes. Those doing short trips or using illegal freeway routes will be stopped, and passengers will be forced to walk to the next bus stop. We urge the public not to board buses that take these unlawful shortcuts.”

He further warned that vehicles operating PMV services without permits are engaging in theft and must cease immediately.

With at least 20 traffic offenders arrested daily, Turi said the operation will make a significant difference. He added that enforcement is not just about punishment but about teaching citizens to respect the law and earn their living honestly.
