Police minister to conduct ‘wokabaut’ awareness in Port Moresby
The new Police Minister, Sir John Pundari, is expected to conduct an awareness walkabout in Port Moresby tomorrow [Tuesday, January 27, 2026], starting at Hanuabada village, as part of efforts to engage communities in law and order and assess police facilities.
Assistant Commissioner of Police, and Commander for NCD/Central Province Police, Benjamin Turi, announced this during an exclusive NBC interview this afternoon, saying the visit reflects renewed leadership support for police.
“With the new minister also showing interest more with us, and just this first time that someone, a minister, will talk and encourage police officers, and he'll be visiting a police station in town tomorrow. Tomorrow, we will be down at Hanuabada village," ACP Turi said.
He said the visit will begin at Hanuabada village in NCD's Moresby North-West electorate, where police will meet with community leaders.
ACP Turi said the police minister and also the police will meet village elders, church leaders and local authorities to discuss safety and community concerns.
He said the Deputy NCD Governor and the local ward chairman, Mr Russel Warwick will also attend the meeting, alongside NCDC officials.
ACP Turi said this follows an invitation to Police Minister by the community to join the discussions.
As part of the walkabout, the Police Minister will inspect key police facilities in the city.
“From there, we will be visiting the Town Police Station. It has been condemned, and so he will see for himself what’s happening,” ACP Turi said.
He added that the minister will also visit Boroko police cells to see their condition firsthand.
“And also, I asked him to come and visit our Boroko Police Station cell, to see the condition of our cell,” he said.
ACP Turi said the visit is important for improving police welfare, infrastructure and frontline working conditions across the city.
