Tension high in Moresby South
Tension is still high within the Two Mile hill and Badili areas in Moresby South electorate, following yesterday's raid and eviction of settlers at Rabiagini.
The incident was triggered from an alleged gunshot fired by settlers at a patrolling police vehicle on Saturday night, with more gunshots heard throughout the night.
Police had given the settlers until 1pm on Sunday to handover the suspects who opened fire, however, failure to comply saw police later moved in and raided the settlement.
Thick plumes of smoke was seen in the air around the Badili and Two Mile areas yesterday, with gunshots also being heard throughout the day.
Commuters and residents in the affected areas were woken up this morning with more gunshots.
Police swiftly moved in and are stationed at the hotspot areas of Badili, Two Mile hill, Kaugere, Sabama and Koki, to quell tensions.
The Koki Market has been closed.
Traffic was affected this morning, with vehicles and commuters diverted from the affected areas. Mothers and children were seen walking along Korobosea and Mahuru to get to a safe place.
The first day of the 2026 academic year was also affected with many parents opting to keep their children at home.
Police have warned opportunists to refrain from taking advantage of the situation and also prevent potential spillover violence.
