Hela Governor Philip Undialu has praised the commitment of 18 Correctional Service officers who worked hard to revive the Hawa Correctional Service institution after it was closed for many years. He said their dedication has helped improve the institution.

Young warder officers at Hawa CS are now relieved after the opening of the new 16-Men Bando Barracks yesterday. For many years, officers and their families lived in very crowded conditions, with two to three families sharing one house.

The new barracks were completed with support from the Hela Provincial Government. The facility was officially opened by the Minister for Correctional Service Joe Kuli, Acting CS Commissioner Benard Nepo, and Governor Philip Undialu.

The project started under the leadership of former Hela Provincial Administrator William Bando, who is now the Minister for Coffee and Koroba Lake Kopiago MP. However, work was delayed due to law-and-order problems in the Tagali LLG. Despite these challenges, the barracks have now been completed.

Hawa CS Commander Chief Inspector Wesly Yope said the institution has faced many difficulties, including serious accommodation problems and no vehicle to transport prisoners.

Minister Kuli assured officers that the Ministry will help address these issues.

"I will ensure that one vehicle is given to you, and the hardships you've faced will slowly be addressed," Minister Kuli said.

He also praised the Hela Provincial Government for supporting Hawa CS.

"Hela Province is a strong partner of the CS Ministry, taking ownership and not waiting for us – a model for other provinces to follow."

Minister Kuli said the Hela Provincial Government has made law and justice a priority.

“The Hela Provincial Government has prioritized the Law and Justice Sector and has improved police capacity and manpower. Under the Hela Police Housing Project, 100 houses were constructed last year for police, for this year, another 100 will be constructed, however, 20 will be constructed for the Hawa CS,” he announced.

Governor Undialu said renovation work on old houses will start soon, so officers can live in better conditions and focus on their duties.
