The East Sepik Governor’s Office, through its Smart Cocoa Program and in partnership with the Cocoa Board of Papua New Guinea, has started an awareness campaign on organic fertilizer use for cocoa farmers.

The initiative sets the stage for a major training session on February 14, 2026, in Hawain, aimed at improving cocoa productivity across the Greater Sepik Region.

Speaking at the awareness program, Daryl Worimo, Regional Cocoa Board Manager for East and West Sepik, encouraged farmers to attend the training.

"Knowing the right amount of fertilizer to use is critical to maximizing production," Worimo said.

Ephraim Wango, officer in charge of the Smart Cocoa Program, said the Hawain training will serve as a pilot, with practical demonstrations on fertilizer application before the program expands to other districts. He assured farmers that the Governor’s Office will continue to support them with resources.

Wango added that the program will provide FertiBio fertilizer and necessary accessories, while also continuing to supply poly bags to cocoa farmers and cooperatives in both East and West Sepik. Cocoa Board experts will guide the training to ensure best practices are followed.

More than 20 cocoa farmers from six districts, including men and women, attended the awareness program. Many thanked Governor Allan Bird for the initiative, saying it is a timely effort to empower communities and strengthen the cocoa industry in the region.

The Smart Cocoa Program reflects East Sepik’s focus on agricultural innovation and community empowerment, positioning cocoa as a key driver of sustainable livelihoods and regional development.
