Two bridges along Madang’s Bruce Jephcott Highway were washed away by heavy flooding early this morning, leaving vehicles and commuters stranded on both sides of the road.

The bridges, located in Ward 10 of the Usino Local Level Government area, have been identified as Yanamu and Aumea bridges.

Usino LLG President Charlie Wati Jnr confirmed the incident but said the exact time the bridges collapsed could not be established.

Madang Works Manager John Pora told NBC News that the bridges were damaged by heavy flooding overnight.

“We are organizing contractors today to create temporary access at both emergency locations,” Pora said. “Once access is established for public use, restoration works on the bridges will begin.”

Pora advised the general public, especially commuters using the highway, to take necessary precautions, as wet crossings are currently impossible due to high floodwaters.

He said Works Department engineers have already been deployed to inspect and assess the damage so restoration work can commence immediately.

Police will also be stationed at the affected sites to provide security for engineers and contractors during the emergency works.
