The people of Wewak Urban can expect stronger services, safer communities, and a louder voice in local decision-making as their Local-Level Government begins a new five-year term.

Speaking at the Wewak Urban LLG first Meeting at Sepik Center of Hope, Mayor Reinie Pierick declared the inaugural meeting duly constituted and welcomed all sixteen ward members.

He reminded them that the swearing-in and inaugural sitting were one continuous, lawful event, ensuring legitimacy of the new council.

The mayor emphasized that the meeting was foundational, setting rules, validating the term, and directing immediate priorities.

Ward Development Committees will be established in all sixteen wards, giving communities a structured way to identify and push forward their priorities.

A Wewak Urban Development Authority will be created to generate revenue and improve municipal services such as waste management, water, and roads.

Mayor Pierick also pledged to reinforce the Urban and Village Court system, ensuring disputes are resolved fairly and quickly to maintain community stability. He highlighted preparations for Wewak’s declaration as a Third-Tier City, stressing that governance and service delivery must meet national urban standards to benefit the growing population.

Partnership with the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary was announced, with community policing to help keep neighborhoods safe and peaceful.

In a significant move, the mayor assigned portfolios to ward members, making them directly accountable for delivering on these priorities.
