Parkop calls on NCD residents to live responsibly in 2026
National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop has appealed to residents to live responsibly as the country enters the new year, urging citizens to commit to positive behaviour and nation-building.
Speaking during New Year’s fireworks celebrations at Ela Beach on Wednesday night, Governor Parkop said Papua New Guinea is built on strong people capable of lifting the nation to higher standards.
“We must challenge ourselves to be better citizens. One of the goals we should set is not to create situations where we have to apologise, pay compensation or say sorry,” Governor Parkop said.
He said responsible living would not only improve individual lives but also help create safer and more supportive communities.
Governor Parkop added that the current generation has a unique opportunity to set things right by establishing clear goals for a fresh start and driving meaningful change.
Also present at the ceremony was NCD City Manager Frank Ravu, who commended the people of the National Capital District for maintaining peace and safety as the nation marked 50 years of Independence.
Ravu thanked residents for their cooperation and commitment to law and order throughout the milestone year.
