Imila bridge collapse cuts key route to Port Moresby, travellers warned
Travellers along the Abau–Rigo–Port Moresby corridor have been warned to exercise extreme caution following the collapse of the Imila Bridge early Saturday morning, cutting off a vital transport link in Central Province.
The bridge, which serves as a key connection between Abau District, Rigo and Port Moresby, collapsed while a heavily loaded truck was attempting to cross, triggering immediate concern for public safety and access.
Member for Abau, Sir Puka Temu, confirmed the incident and said authorities and local leaders are now racing against time to restore temporary access for the travelling public.
Sir Puka said Global Construction, the company currently maintaining the Imila–Moreguina road section, is already on site assessing options to construct a temporary bypass.
“A temporary road is expected to be put in place within the next 48 hours to allow traffic to resume,” Sir Puka said.
He said the collapse has been reported to the Secretary for the Department of Works and Highways, with discussions underway on longer-term solutions for the damaged infrastructure.
Sir Puka urged motorists and commuters to remain patient and cautious, warning against attempting unsafe crossings while repair works are ongoing.
Central Police are also on site to provide security and manage traffic as assessment and construction work continues.
The Imila Bridge collapse has disrupted travel and transport services for communities in Abau District and surrounding areas, underscoring ongoing concerns about the condition of critical road infrastructure linking rural districts to the nation’s capital.
